sharing all of the highly relevant information and guidance!
A final reminder to attend High School
Back to School Night next week!
Seven 11th and 12th grade girls (Ananya
Atluri, Isha Suresh, Neila Cuvilliers, Aafia Sait, Nina Kumar, Shruthi
Chandrasekar and Nivetha Kumar), along with Ms. Shari Abbott, spent this past
weekend at the Mount Holyoke College Shakti program at ASB in Mumbai. The
interactive panel discussions and workers, led by speakers who were professors,
journalists, corporate CEOs, and NGO founders,
provided insights about how work-family balance, skilling up and
flexible perspective contributed to their success. Ananya wrote, “I learned that even with the
requisite qualifications, I need to make sure my voice is heard in what is
still a male-dominated society. The conference helped us reflect on our
identities and crystallize concrete goals with strong women mentors to guide
us.”
Many thanks to everyone who
applied for Student Advisory Forum (SAF) this year. Please note that there was
limited interest from grade 9 so only the three who applied were appointed. We
had more applicants than spots available for the remaining grade levels and
spent considerable time deliberating as a team since all of the applications
were strong. In the end, the committee considered the quality of each
application alongside balancing nationality and gender with a mix of students
who have never done SAF before alongside some that had.

As you may know, two members of student
council also sit on SAF as ex-officio members. They are Heewon Hwang and Minha
Park.
Finally, this year we are prototyping
something new by appointing two veteran SAF members to act as mentors to
students new to the forum. These SAF Facilitators will also help to set the
agendas and facilitate the meetings. They are Prahalad Giridhar and ChoHa Kim.
An additional congratulations to the newly elected grade
9 student council representatives: Arjan Chakravarthy, Noa Daryn and Achilles Daniels Condon.
Activities Mela -
September 4th
Please note that students will be able
to visit an Activities Mela during assembly time on Tuesday, September 4th, in
order to learn more about clubs and service opportunities available this term.
Parent Coffee Follow
Up
Many thanks to the parents who attended
the Parent Coffee this week. Here is
the presentation. A voice over will be added this week to be circulated next
Friday. You will notice at the beginning there is a short student created
video. Note that this video is also being produced in Korean and French. We
hope to share those versions with you in the next two weeks.
Meet Soyeon Lee
Soyeon Lee has joined AISC as the High School Personalized Learning Coordinator. This means she works with students taking online courses, academic personalized learning projects, passion projects and those enrolled in the IB CAS program. She also helps Mr. McFarland manage our Discovery Program. Soyeon recently received her Master’s degree in Organizational Behavior at Cornell University, where she was also a teaching assistant. She previously worked in a variety of multi-national corporations on Culture, Strategy Implementation, and Operations & Logistics teams. Soyeon is not new to South India and is a graduate of Kodaikanal International School. She shares that a good friend describes her as "Korean by blood, Indian by experience and American by education" and she loves that her identity has not been restricted by man-made borders. Soyeon feels fortunate to have made non-traditional career pivots throughout her career and is proud to have worked in areas that were of interest and enabled her personal growth. It is no wonder that she is enjoying meeting with students to learn what drives their commitment to their personalized learning. She finds that they have set high expectations for themselves and she can't wait to support them!
First Early Release
Schedule Coming Wednesday
On September 5th we will have our first
Early Release Wednesday. Students are expected to depart campus in a timely and
organized fashion upon dismissal at 2:00 pm. We appreciate your patience with
traffic on these days as all three sections are picking up students at the same
time. In preparation, please plan on allowing longer time for entry and exit to
the school at release time. For our Middle and High School students, hot lunch
will be served. Please note that the iHub will be open to provide an air-conditioned
waiting space until 2:40 pm in case drivers are delayed. Food services in the
iHub will close at 1:50 pm.

International Day of Peace and Parade of Nations

This year's UN International Peace Day
celebration will be held on Friday, September 14. The Parade of Nations,
where all of the student body parades in their national dress across the stage,
will be held in the FAC Theater. The early date this year was chosen, because
high school students start leaving for their Discover India trips on Friday,
September 21 and we wanted all students to be included in the event. The Parade
of Nations will be followed by a normal school day.
How does the parade work? Students will
be marching under their citizenship of record as listed in PowerSchool, our
student information system, and as indicated during the admissions process. If
you would like to make a change and have your child(ren) march under a flag
different from their citizenship, kindly send this information directly to
Sanja Ilić, Director of Admissions, (admissionsdirector@aischennai.org).
Admissions office will be accommodating the aforementioned requests until
August 31, 2018.
