successful ULEAD conference this past weekend. I hope to share pictures from
the event next week!
An
additional congratulations to all grade 9 students for their excellent National
History Day work. As you may know, while we use NHD as a vehicle for teaching
historical inquiry at school, the projects are also part of a global
competition. I am thrilled to announce the projects that were selected by the
judges to represent AISC at the upcoming regional round in Singapore on March
10th.

Discovery Day
On
Friday, February 2nd, the High School will suspend our usual routine so that
students can participate in Discovery Day. This special event happens once per
semester and attendance is required. Students have a menu of activities to choose from - from volunteering at Blue
Cross to practicing mindfulness to engaging in field study off campus - and the
hope is that students will get a chance to explore something different each
time.
A Reminder - School Monitored Make-Up Session
The
first school monitored make-up session will be on Friday, February 2nd from
4:00 - 6:00 pm. Such sessions occur almost every Friday or Saturday in support
of students completing missed summative assessments and doing retakes.
Teachers
will inform families if a summative assessment is not turned in or is missed
due to an absence and will assign the student to the next available study
session to complete the work. All missed summative assessments should be
completed within two weeks of the due date. Students who do not complete all
summative assessments lose credit for the course.
Students
interested in scheduling a retake for a summative assessment must first
complete the retake request form found in the bulletin and, then, schedule a
meeting with the relevant teacher. Together the teacher and student will decide
on a study plan and schedule the retake at the next available study session.
Again, all retakes should be completed within two weeks of the student
receiving the original marked assessment. The full retake policy can be viewed
on page 59 of the Student Handbook.
Save the Date - Junior Class College Night - A
Note from the Counselors
Please
join the High School Counselors for Junior Class College Night on Monday,
February 5th at 6:00 pm in the Madras Hall. This is an important event
for Juniors to officially kick-off the college application process. The
presentation will not be country specific. It will outline steps that students
should take to be prepared for college applications regardless of their destination.
There will be a focus on best ways to build a college list and next steps in
the application process. Mr. Laposky and Ms. McGlamery hope to see all members
of the Class of 2019 and their parents on this important evening!
Course Registration for the 2018/19 School Year Begins! - Repeat
Announcement
Believe it or not we will
soon start the registration process for next school year! The process will
begin with the release of our updated Curriculum Guide online at 4:00 pm on
Monday, January 29th. The following day students in grades 9 - 11 will attend a
brief registration assembly that will walk them through the registration
process. This will be followed by optional AP/IB informational session
for students in grades 9 and 10 during lunch on Wednesday, January 31st.
Teachers will begin conferencing with students in early February to advise them
regarding the next appropriate class in each discipline.
In the meantime, please
mark your calendars for an optional AP/IB information session for Grade 9 and
10 parents with Mr. Malone on Tuesday, January 30th from 10:00 - 11:00 am in
the BBT.
Save the Date - Session Two SBAR Parent Coffee - Repeat
Announcement
The second presentation in
the series regarding next year’s move to Standards Based Assessment and
Reporting will take place on Thursday, February 1st from 8:45 - 10:00 am in the
BBT. The presentation will explore the three achievement reporting strands, the
reporting scale and give parents a sense of how final marks will be determined.
Mr. Basnight and Ms. Daryn will be on hand to share practical examples from
their classes. If you missed the first session, which gave an overview, kindly
watch this abridged presentation before the coffee.
