You are Invited - A Message from HS Science

The IB class of 2017 cordially invites you to their Group 4 Project poster presentations, which will take place on Monday, February 27th, from 3:45-4:45pm in the BBT.

The Group 4 project is a collaborative, interdisciplinary activity that involves all IB science students. Students explore a common topic or theme, and come up with their own research questions and methodologies for exploring these. Throughout, the emphasis is on the process rather than the product. This year, the Group 4 project focused on the Kovalam beach area, where the ocean meets a saltwater lake. This is also one of the egresses of the Buckingham canal.

Students conducted a preliminary visit, followed by a data collection trip a few days later, and are looking forward to sharing their journey and findings during the poster presentations on Monday afternoon! All are welcome!

Beach Clean Up - A Message from NHS

On Sunday, 19th February, AISC's NHS hosted the annual beach clean up in collaboration with Namma Beach Namma Chennai. This event marked the fourth annual Operation Ice-Cream, an incentive program in which each bag of trash collected earns the participant an ice cream.

AISC students, community members, and students from the local Christian Advent School participated. Many of the students from the local school had also participated in previous years and were eager to return.

After arriving to the beach, everyone was briefed on safety precautions, as well as the importance of the work at hand! One student mentioned that he "never thought he had to reason to think about all this, that it either takes care of itself or it doesn't," and, thus, he appreciated the opportunity to tackle the issue in a more hands-on and immediate way. We also distributed the shoes collected through our “Shoe Drive” to the local school students.

By the end of the clean up, we had collected over fifty bags of trash, learned a little more about the Chennai beach ecosystem, and discussed with the local students what could be done to extend this work.

We are considering the possibility of hosting two clean ups next year. Due to the rapid rate at which trash collects, this might be helpful in making the project more sustainable.

Save the Date - High School Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences - Repeat Announcement

Drop in arena style student/parent/teacher conferences will be available on Tuesday, March 7th from 3:45 - 5:30 pm.  This style of conference is most appropriate for non-confidential quick check ins.

By appointment student/parent/teacher conferences will be scheduled for Thursday, March 9th between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.  The link to sign up for conferences will go live on March 3rd at the same time mid-semester progress reports are available. The link will go home in the notes that same Friday.

Sincerely,
Joelle Basnight
