Dear Students and Parents,
I am thrilled to share with you an amazing story about one of our students, Yoohyung An! Yoohyung is a member of the ARC Lifeguarding class and recently save the life of a drowning victim! While working out at his apartment complex, he noticed an older woman swimming. He then realized that she has stopped swimming and was face down in the water. He entered the pool, saved her, got her out of the pool. He had someone call emergency services and administered 2 full rounds of CPR before emergency services arrived. What is even more spectacular is that Yoohyung's quick response and proper administration of CPR saved her life. Last week the woman and her son came to thank Yoohyung for his heroism and we, here at AISC, could not be more proud of his quick action and his courage! Well done YY!
Summer Travel Planning - Exam Schedule Out Soon
Mr. Malone is hard at work solidifying the exam schedule for this semester. Please make note of the following when making summer travel plans.
IB and AP courses do not have internal exams. Thus, once the student has sat the external AP or IB exam in May the class is officially complete.
Seniors will have all of their exam completed and final obligations finished by graduation on Saturday, May 27th.
Internal examinations (non AP/IB) for students in grade 9 - 11 will take place on Friday, May 26th as well as Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (May 29 to 31st). Conflict exams will run on Thursday, June 1st. While most students will complete their exams by the 31st, it is important to delay purchasing plane tickets departing any earlier than June 1st until the exam schedule is published. Mr. Malone hopes that everyone will have this in hand right after spring break.
Please note that we will host our farewell assembly on Friday, May 26th so that all departing students will be present.
Mid Semester Progress Reports and Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences
Progress reports, both written and online, will be available today as of 3:30 pm.
Drop in arena style student/parent/teacher conferences will be available on Tuesday, March 7th from 3:45 - 5:30 pm. This style of conference is most appropriate for non-confidential quick check ins.
By appointment student/parent/teacher conferences will be scheduled for Thursday, March 9th between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. The link to sign up for conferences will go live on March 3rd at the same time mid-semester progress reports are available. Here is the link to book an appointment.
Celebration of Learning - Please Stop By!
This semester’s Celebration of Learning will be on Thursday, March 9th, from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm in the Hall of Light and the BBT. Students from all different courses will be on hand to explain their academic exhibits. Here is a film short with highlights from last semester’s Celebration of Learning.
Freedom from Chemical Dependency Week - From the Counseling Office
As part of our health education program and ongoing commitment to prevention and wellness, each year we invite a trained prevention specialist from FCD Prevention Works to join our community. FCD is a non-profit organization that provides substance abuse prevention education for schools. Their mission is to:
Encourage and support the non-use of alcohol and other illegal or illicit drugs during the growing years
Empower young people to make healthy, responsible choices regarding alcohol and other drug use
Teach students and adults how to recognize the early warning signs of substance abuse and to intervene appropriately
Educate students, parents, teachers and administrators on the physiological and psychological effects of alcohol and other drugs
The prevention specialist will be meeting with students in Grades 6-12 during the week of March 21-28. Their aim is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding, and skills they need to make intelligent, healthy choices about alcohol and other drug use. During that time, they will meet with students as follows:
Grade 6: 3 meetings during health class
Grade 7: 3 meetings during health class
Grade 8: 2 meetings during health class
Grade 9: 2 meetings during elective classes
Grade 10: 1 meeting during lunch (lunch provided)
Grade 11: 2 meetings during lunch (lunch provided)
Grade 12: Senior session on Saturday, March 25
The FCD prevention specialist will also present a parent workshop on Tuesday, March 21st at 8:45am in the BBT. Please note that this is the day students return to school after Spring Break and it is a change from what is currently on our school calendar (it will no longer be on March 28). We wanted to give parents a chance, at the start of the FCD visit, to listen to the facilitator so that they can more easily engage their children in conversations about the topic while it is also being discussed at school. Some of the topics the facilitator will discuss with parents include:
Effective ways to communicate with your child about alcohol/drug use
Up-to-date facts about current alcohol/drug use and trends
What to say about your own experiences with alcohol and/or drug experimentation
How to spot early warning signs of trouble and effective ways to respond
The importance of communication among community members
This program presents a perfect opportunity for discussing alcohol and other drug-related issues with your children. Parent involvement is crucial to efforts to reduce the risks that teenagers face and in the commitment to keeping children safe. We hope to see you on March 21st. HOPY Dolls Campaign - a Note from the Interact Club
The Interact Club strongly believes that a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. In order to facilitate healthy hygiene practices our club is organizing a fundraising event to buy hygiene kits for the local school that the club supports. We are planning to sell HOPY Dolls, made by our volunteers on Discovery Day, to bring Hope and Happiness into young lives in the local community. According to popular myth if you feel sad and depressed, making these dolls will help you. Originally known as 'Worry Dolls' they absorb your sadness and free you. You can get your own Hopy Doll by donating to this worthy cause.

Upcoming Fun Night Out - A Note from the Organizing Committee
Most of you are probably looking forward to the upcoming spring break holiday. The next HS Fun Night Out is scheduled just after break on Friday, March 24. One of your favorites is returning...Sports Night!
The evening will include Basketball, Volleyball, Dodgeball, Badminton and Soccer on the roof. Dinner will be served prior from 6-7pm in the covered area followed by sports from 7-9:20 and finishing with prizes and ice cream. It is sure to be a fun and active night. Please complete the following sign up form to select which sports you would like to participate in so that the schedule of events can be planned accordingly. If more than 25 students are not signed up by the end of the day Wednesday, March 22, the end will not take place. Student can sign up here.

Changes in SAT Administrations for 2017/18 - A Message from the Counselors
We would like to keep you informed about a change that The College Board has made in regards to international testing dates for the SAT. This may impact your testing plan and should be taken into account as you move ahead.
The big changes that directly impact our students at AISC are (directly from the CB website):
- Reducing the international testing dates for the SAT from six to four for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years, with administrations in October, December, March, and May. Recognizing that international students use both the SAT and SAT Subject Tests to build competitive applications, SAT Subject Tests will be available in October, November, December, May, and June.
- Canceling the June 2017 international SAT administration, as part of the change to the international test administration schedule. SAT Subject Tests will be available during the June 2017 administration.
Specific test dates have not yet been released. Current Juniors should plan accordingly; please see your counselor if you have any questions about this.

Yearbook Photo Orders - A Message from Ms. Sunita - Repeat Announcement
Your child's individual and class yearbook pictures from the August 2016 & January 2017 photo sessions may be purchased using this form. To view photos please visit the all school Moodle page (password: raptors17) and go to the folder called “Yearbook photos 2016-17.” If your child joined school after September 4th, or missed the first session, the photo can be found in the folder labelled "SESSION 2 ". Please complete the form, make payment at the cash counter and submit the form at the respective section office. Last day for orders is 7 March. Prints will be ready for pick up after 21 March. If you have any questions about the ordering process, please contact the HS / MS office.
