Last Saturday
I had the pleasure of participating in a beach cleanup at Fish Cove. This
community service was organized by two of our National Honor Society members,
Arjun Anand and Sruti Raja in conjunction with the Bay of Life Surf School and
the Vivanta Hotel management. Earlier in the week, the owners of the surf
school came to AISC to give a presentation on the impact of plastics on sea
life. They described one of their projects – teaching local youths to surf in
order to build an appreciation and sense of responsibility for the ocean and
the shore.
Assisted
by their faculty advisors Manoharan Krishnan, Mark Lueders and Ed Doherty, the NHS
students made arrangements to transport around 60 of their fellow students to
the beach. On arrival the cleanup effort was organized quickly. The students
and other AISC community members grabbed rakes and collection bags and began
gathering the trash that was on the beach. An area larger than a football pitch
was cleared and the garbage stacked in little over an hour. Following
refreshments provided by the Taj management, the students took their reward
with a refreshing dip in the ocean. A few students even tried surfing. All in all, it was a very productive morning that provided an opportunity for our students to not only do something to improve their environment but also to learn firsthand the environmental challenges posed by the use of plastics. To capitalize on their enthusiasm, the NHS students have organized another beach cleanup for tomorrow. Well done, Arjun and Sruti!
SAISA Sports weekend – This weekend three of our SAISA sports teams are competing for top honors. Our boys basketball team is at the Lincoln School in Kathmandu, our track and field team is at the Overseas School of Colombo and our girls soccer team playing right here at AISC. You can see the schedule on the Athletic Directors webpage, along with links to live streaming video of the events. Come out and support our Raptor ladies this weekend!
High School Parent Coffee – Monday, March 11 from 10:00 to
11:00 a.m. in the Black Box Theater I will share information about recent
faculty discussions regarding student awards. Immediately following this
meeting I will meet with parents of Seniors to discuss end-of-year procedures
and the commencement exercises.
Missing
items – We have
had several thefts recently, most notably from the PE locker rooms. While we
make every effort to encourage responsible citizenship and to minimize the
opportunities, theft can and does still occur. Please encourage your children
to be careful with their valuables, especially small electronic equipment. All
students have been provided with lockers and locks for their books. They are
also encouraged to put their clothing and valuables in lockers while
participating in PE classes or sports practices. Locks for this purpose are
available in the Poolside Store. We ask everyone to report lost or missing
items to the high school administrative assistant, Ms. Berna, so that we can
follow up and try to locate them.
Course registration for 2013-2014 – We have one more week to
finalize the course selection process for next year. It is very important that
students submit their course selection forms by Friday, March 15. For more
