Dear Parents,
The Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences are
taking place as I write. It is a great opportunity for everyone concerned with
a child’s education to meet and talk about what’s going well, what’s not and
what could be done to improve. The conversations are going well. I have
especially enjoyed the opportunity to chat with new parents and students about
their experiences at AISC. Many thanks to Mrs. Calloway and our high school faculty for helping these students get settled in and become part of our community. It has been wonderful to hear that they are happy to
be a part of the AISC community.
New face in the office – As you may know, Mrs. Berna Thomman, the Administrative
Assistant for the High School, has announced that she will be leaving AISC. It
will be a big loss - she has been the heart and soul of the high school office
for as long as there has been a high school and has been an integral part of
the school for long before that. She has helped to maintain the stability of
the high school through changing administrations and a period of phenomenal
growth. She has certainly been an invaluable help to me in my short time at the
school.
Mrs. Berna has
announced that her last day at the school will be April 5. She
and Mrs. Ronald, our Director of Personnel, have assisted me in finding someone
to take on this key role. Her name is Sunita Suchit. Sunita hails from Chennai,
was educated here and in the U.K and has a background in administration in the
health care industry. Sunita joined us today to begin learning the myriad
responsibilities that Berna so effortlessly manages. I hope you will join me in
extending a warm AISC welcome to Sunita when you see her.
High School Parent Coffee – We had a great discussion about
our IB and AP courses at the meeting on Wednesday. It was a good opportunity to
address questions and hear different perspectives on the earlier proposal to
extend the IB and AP science courses to two years and combine them with the IB
science courses. One thing is clear – we are all motivated by the desire to
provide the best possible learning experience for our students. There are
differences of opinion about how best to do that. Sharing those differences
will help to make the best decisions as we go forward.
Unfortunately
I did not have time to share information about recent faculty discussions
regarding academic awards for students. Because this is an important issue, we
will have an additional High School Parent Coffee on Tuesday, March
5 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Black Box Theater.
Staying hydrated – It’s getting hotter outside
and time to be more thoughtful about drinking enough water. Our elementary and
middle school environmental club, Roots and Shoots, has prepared a reminder to

Bollywood Dance update - Senior Kavitha Arumugam, coordinator and choreographer of the Bollywood Dance Club at AISC, has provided us with news and photos of the group's recent performances. You can see her update at Bollywood Dance Club.
Lost items – We are fortunate to have an atmosphere of security and trust at AISC and we are fortunate not to have many incidents of theft. However, from time to time things go missing. Sometimes they are simply mislaid but occasionally things are taken without the owner’s permission. When we learn about a missing item, we make every effort to recover it.

In the
event that something is stolen it is not always possible to recover it, but if
we are informed we can begin to look for patterns that might lead to the
discovery of the thief.
Whenever
something goes missing, please report it as soon as possible to the secretaries
at the section (high school, middle school or elementary school) that your
child attends. You will be asked to complete a form that will be given to the
Principal, who will then follow up as appropriate with the campus security
personnel. Found items will be taken to the main reception desk and then placed
in the bins near the main gate.
Course registration for 2013-2014 – It is an important time
for students, parents and teachers to be discussing the student’s next steps in
their academic careers. Mrs. Callaway has also posted valuable information on her
website, (aischguidance.blogspot.in/).
From now through March 15 Mrs. Callaway will be meeting individually with
students and their parents to plan their courses for next year and beyond. The
course selection forms will be due in the office by March 15. For more
