High School Students Get the Shivers - A Note
from Mr. Luna
Last week, High School
Students Anusha, Alice, Hyoeun, Yeewon, and Seungyun braved the Middle School
Halloween production Shivers. Working as stage managers and run crew,
these students were charged as leaders backstage by making transitions run
smoothly, set props in place, as well as being an example for the Middle School
backstage students! A big congrats to this crew for helping put on a great
show!
Congratulations - AMIS Choir Honorees
The
AMIS (Association for Music in International Schools) HS Honor Choir Festival
is the best of its kind in the international school world. Placements in the
Honor Choirs is highly sought after and the audition process very competitive,
with hundreds of students auditioning from the world over. This year's Festival
will take place at TAISM in Oman, from March 12-14, 2020.
A big
congratulations to:
· Rishi Bharadwaj for earning a place as a Tenor in the Men's
Honor Choir
· Anya Kumar for earning a place as a Soprano in the Women's Honor
Choir
· Noa Daryn for placing as a Soprano alternate in the Women's
Honor Choir.
Career Conversation - November 12th Lunchtime - A Note from Ms.
Sovak
Approximately
once a month we offer lunchtime career conversations for our high school
students. These sessions are informal and students are encouraged to ask
questions. On November 12th, we will host a conversation for students
interested in knowing more about pursuing law as a career. We will welcome Ms.
Preeti Mohan to our campus. Ms. Mohan is a partner at JM Legal and specializes
in commercial and corporate litigation. Students are invited to sign up with
Ms. Priya and will be provided with a pizza lunch on that day.
Celebration of Learning - Please Join Us Friday
The first-semester Celebration of Learning will
take place in the BBT and the Madras Hall on Friday, November 15th, from 3:45 -
5:00 pm. The Celebration of Learning is a learning fair in which students share
with visitors what they have been learning in class. Each station is
interactive and the Celebration is an excellent way for parents to get a truer
sense of what the student experience is all about. Please join us!
RISE Event - Tuesday, November 19
On Tuesday, November 19th, the high school will
have an extended assembly to attend RISE at 2:30 pm. This semester’s RISE event
will feature the following speakers:
Dr. Rakesh Jalali, Director, Apollo Proton Cancer Centre
Dr. Rakesh Jalali is the Medical Director and Head of Radiation
Oncology at Apollo Proton Cancer Centre. He is an internationally renowned key
opinion leader in Oncology, particularly known for high-precision radiotherapy
techniques. Over the years, he has done path-breaking research in the field of
cancer treatment, enhancing the quality of life for cancer patients and
developing appropriate research models.
The Neuro-Oncology group at Tata Memorial Hospital was developed
by Dr. Jalali. It is hailed as the finest such unit in India and recognized
throughout the world. He was also instrumental in establishing the Indian
Society of Neuro-Oncology (ISNO) in 2008. Dr. Jalali served as its founding
general secretary, then its President, and now chairs its senior advisory
council.
A much sought-after
speaker, Dr. Jalali is widely regarded for his teaching and for providing
expert guidance to various national and international scientific meetings and
professional societies. He is also well known for his commitment to charity and
promoting equitable cancer care for patient populations in the developing
world. Dr. Jalali founded the “Brain Tumour Foundation of India,” an
internationally recognized charity organization dedicated to the welfare of
patients with brain tumors and their families. He has over 300 publications.
Aditi
Prasad, Founder of Indian Girls Code Initiative; COO & CIO, Robotix
Aditi Prasad has a B.S.L LL.B Law degree from the Indian Law
Society, India, and a master’s in Public Policy from the Lee Kuan Yew School of
Public Policy, NUS, Singapore.
Aditi is on a mission to inspire and educate young girls and
boys to learn to code and develop real-world solutions for real-world
challenges—by harnessing the power of robotics, coding, STEM & Maker-Spaces
to make school education more interactive and immersive. In India, where
technical degrees often lead to better jobs, Aditi is promoting educational
pathways that lead to better careers and opportunities for girls. She is
helping to make tech studies more approachable and fun and creating
game-changers for girls in STEM.
Aditi was invited to be the Keynote Speaker at UNESCO's Policy
Forum, held in Bangkok in August 2017, where she presented “Cracking the Code:
Girls' Education in STEM.”
Aditi was also invited by TEDx Chennai India at its March 2018
and TEDx Mumbai India in March 2019 event to talk about the Indian Girls Code
initiative.
Aditi was also
honored by the government of Singapore in September 2017 to be one of 15 Young
Societal leaders selected from around the world for a global leadership event.
Save the Date - Parent Coffee
The next high school parent
coffee will take place on Tuesday, November 26th at 8:45 am in the BBT. Our
school psychologist, Nigel Holdsworth, will make a presentation about the
school’s sexuality curriculum.
Next Early Release Wednesday
The next Early Release
Wednesday will be on November 20th. Students are expected to depart campus in a
timely and organized fashion upon dismissal at 2:00 pm. For our Middle and High
School students, a hot lunch will be served. Food services in the iHub will
close at 1:50 pm. Please note that the iHub will be open to provide an
air-conditioned waiting area until 2:40 pm in case drivers are delayed. We
appreciate your patience with traffic these days as all three sections are
picking up students at the same time.
Next PowerSchool Progress Update
The next PowerSchool progress
update will take place on Thursday, November 27th. By that time summative
assessments taken shortly after the mid-semester progress report deadline will
be posted in the program.
Semester 1 Revision and Final Exam Schedule – A
Note from Mr. Malone
From Tuesday, December 10th until Friday, December 13th,
students will be engaged in one of two activities during class time: revising
for their paper/pen two-hour final examination or completing alternative
cumulative final assessments.
As you make your winter travel plans please keep in mind that
final examinations cannot be given early. Students unable to complete their
examinations before the winter break will be required to complete alternative
forms of the examinations starting Monday morning, January 13th at 8:15 am.
