Dear Students and Parents,
Congratulations (again) to MUN IMPACT and Sanjana who accepted the Service Award at THIMUN Qatar this weekend!
January honors ethical students. Ethical students show responsibility for their choices and consider the impact of choices on themselves, others and the environment. Ethical students act on their principles and ideals, supporting the dignity of others and themselves. Ethical students are role models for others, acting and articulating their views with respect, especially in challenging and uncomfortable situations.
Congratulations to:
Grade 12 - Serin Kim - Serin feels strongly that the world should be a better place and the best way to begin is to help make the lives of the people in her community better. She is not afraid to stand up for her ideas and works diligently to realize her goals. Her continued efforts are a model to her peers and everyone around her.
Grade 11 - Harin Jeong - Harin cares deeply about equity in the world and thinks about how her choices affect others. Her concern for others has led her to reach out in the community and take action. She is a role model to those around her, as she sticks with her views even when it is challenging.
Grade 10 - Juyang Kim - Juyang is very conscious of how her actions affect the environment. She takes sustainability seriously even when it is challenging and difficult. She is a quiet force for change.
Grade 9 - Chloe Bridgeland - Chloe thinks not of only herself, but is concerned about how choices and events affect others around her. She is a role model who stands up for what she believes is right and just. She is not afraid to take action even when the situation is uncomfortable or challenging.

Score Distribution for Semester 1
As January represents the close of the first semester using Standards-Based Reporting, I wanted to share our score distribution for the section. Below you will find a graph that shows the spread of all scores earned in high school on progress reports, shown in blue, and on semester report cards, shown in red. Each curve represents over 1400 points of data. You will see that students improved overall from the progress grade to the final grade, something we would hope to see in a “recent, most consistent score” based environment in which students receive helpful feedback for growth. As a reminder, a score of 7 or 8 is exemplary, a score of 5 or 6 is proficient, a score of 3 or 4 is developing and a score of 1 or 2 is insufficient.
This week the counselors finalized the supplemental school profile with seniors which includes a similar curve for the Class of 2019 as well as the spread of scores in each class. This profile will be sent with all mid-year reports and new applications (along with the previous profile representing performance in grade 11). This profile will soon be available on our website should you wish to see what such graphs and tables look like with our new reporting system.

Meet James Dowling
James Dowling, Physical Education teacher at the High School, loves providing students the opportunity to physically adapt and learn about themselves as they navigate a variety of contexts. He hopes his students take the skills they learn and apply them throughout their lives in any physical activity of their choice. James is originally from Australia, and he has worked as a teacher in seven different countries over the past two decades. It makes him proud that his peers seek him out as a valuable resource in the field of Physical Education, and he thoroughly enjoys presenting and sharing his expertise at conferences and workshops around the world. James is joined at AISC with his wife, Keryn, the Elementary School Principal, and his two daughters Amelie (8th grader) and Summer (5th grader). If he is able to be on a TV show, it will definitely be Masterchef as he loves to cook and compete.
Next Early Release Wednesday Coming - Repeat Announcement
The next Early Release Wednesday will be on February 6th. Students are expected to depart campus in a timely and organized fashion upon dismissal at 2:00 pm unless participating in the Wellness Summit. We appreciate your patience with traffic on these days as all three sections are picking up students at the same time. In preparation, please plan on allowing longer time for entry and exit to the school at release time. For our Middle and High School students, a hot lunch will be served. Please note that the iHub will be open to provide an air-conditioned waiting space until 2:40 pm in case drivers are delayed. Food services in the iHub will close at 1:50 pm.
