Dear Students and
Parents,
Congratulations to the
students chosen for the Vision recognition in January!
Ethical students show
responsibility for their choices and consider the impact of choices on
themselves, others and the environment. Ethical students act on their
principles and ideals, supporting the dignity of others and themselves.
Ethical students are role models for others, acting and articulating
their views with respect, especially in challenging and uncomfortable situations.

Progress Update Today
Today marks the first
official Progress Update of the semester. Teachers have done their best to
grade all recently submitted assignments and record them in PowerSchool for
your reference. The next official update will be Friday, February 23rd.
Upcoming Student Lifestyle Survey
Parents should have
received an email directly from the school at the end of January explaining the
upcoming Student Lifestyle Survey. This announcement is serving as a final
reminder as the survey will take place on February 20th.
As indicated in the email,
the administration/counseling team has decided to pilot an alternative survey
this year. It was developed by Challenge Success project in the Graduate School
of Education at Stanford University and
it is our hope that this externally benchmarked survey may give us even richer
information about students than our previous version. Challenge Success will be
helping us with the data analysis and, as such, we will have the information in
hand to share with the community sometime in late March/early April.
The goal of the survey is
to better understand students’ experiences in school and at home. Students will
be asked questions about how they spend their time after school, their
relationships with their teachers, academic engagement, parent goals and
expectations, sleep, stress, and academic integrity. Your child’s individual
privacy will be maintained in all published and written data resulting from
this study. Challenge Success will only share data that do not allow individual
students to be identified. However, if your child shares information on the
survey that indicates that there is a risk to his/her safety or someone else’s
safety, Challenge Success will pass on the relevant demographic information to
AISC in the hopes of supporting the student.
If you are comfortable with
your child participating in the survey, you need not do anything further.
You are, however, welcome to read the information sheet
published by Challenge Success for further details. If you do NOT want your
child to participate in the survey, please fill out this information sheet and
return to the High School Office by Tuesday morning.
Next Early Release Wednesday
A quick reminder that
Wednesday, February 21st, will be our next Early Release Wednesday. Students
are expected to depart campus in a timely and organized fashion upon dismissal
at 2:00 pm. We appreciate your patience with traffic on these days as all three
sections are picking up students at the same time. In preparation, please plan
on allowing longer time for entry and exit to the school at release time. For
our Middle and High School students, hot lunch will be served.
At the request of the
student advisory forum, the iHub will remain open until 2:30 pm as an air
conditioned place for high school students to wait for drivers. Please note
that food service will continue to close at 2:10 pm.
Course Registration for the 2018/19 School Year - Update
With advising by teachers
and counselors well underway, students have between now and February 13th to
make their initial selection of courses and collect all necessary
approvals/signatures.
Rest assured that while
February 13th is a firm deadline for initial selections, students will have the
opportunity to change their course selections as they meet with counselors and
teachers over the next several weeks. We will go through a “registration
verification” process in March which will prompt students to make any desired
changes to their requests at that time. More details about the verification
process will follow when the time grows closer.

Upcoming Event - Freedom from Chemical Dependency Visit
As part
of our health education program and ongoing commitment to prevention and
wellness, each year we invite a trained prevention specialist from FCD
Prevention Works to join our community. FCD is a non-profit organization that
provides substance abuse prevention education for schools. Their mission is to:
- Encourage and support the non-use of alcohol and other
illegal or illicit drugs during the growing years
- Empower young people to make healthy, responsible
choices regarding alcohol and other drug use
- Teach students and adults how to recognize the early warning
signs of substance abuse and to intervene appropriately
- Educate students, parents, teachers and administrators
on the physiological and psychological effects of alcohol and other drugs
The
prevention specialist will be meeting with students in Grades 9-12 during the
week of February 26 - March 2. Their aim is to provide students with the
knowledge, understanding, and skills they need to make intelligent, healthy
choices about alcohol and other drug use. During that time, they will meet with
Grade 9 students over 2 lunch periods, Grade 10 students will be excused from
1/2 of 2 class blocks, Grade 11 students over 2 lunch periods and will have a
special session with Grade 12 students on Saturday morning from 10am-12pm. A
special session with Grade 12 parents will also be held on Saturday morning at
9:00am. Finally, the specialist will lead a MS/HS Parent Coffee on Thursday,
March 1st, from 8:45 - 9:45 am in the Madras Hall.
