Day of Silence - A Message from SAGE
On Monday, April 17th, high school students participated in the Day of Silence at AISC by not speaking for the day. Inspired by GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network), SAGE's Day of Silence aims to bring attention to the silencing effect bullying, harassment and discrimination can have on marginalized groups, such as the LGBTQ+ community. This year’s event had the highest participation and engagement overall was high. Remaining silent for the day was definitely a challenge because communication is essential to our everyday lives. From socializing with friends to asking our teachers clarifying questions in class, we often don’t realize how much we need our voices to get through the day. For us, it was only one day of silence but for many around the world, it is everyday. Through deliberately being silent, we wanted to bring attention to this issue of discrimination. in addition to taking a vow of silence, many students participated in a lunch time activity intended to help us recognize various privileges and disadvantages we have and how they affect us. We broke the silence by gathering at the end of the day and shouting "we will not be silent" as a protest against this form of bullying and discrimination. Day of Silence was a resounding success and sparked much discussion about these issues . We hope to see even more participation and leadership in the coming years!

The Heat is ON!
As the temperature outside rises rest assured that we keep an eye on the heat and adjust PE and extracurricular activities accordingly. While we don’t prohibit students from relaxing outdoors during break and lunch we will monitor kids to ensure that they do not spend too much active free time outdoors in the heat of the day. If this week is any indication most High School students are remaining in the shade or indoors during their free time. Regardless, please speak with your son or daughter about the importance of remaining hydrated and ensure that he/she has a water bottle at school daily.
AP/IB Study Leave
Believe it or not AP and IB exams will begin shortly. This Friday (21st) marks the final day of class for all IB Diploma students. IB Certificate students and AP students received study leave as per their individual exam schedule. They are excused from the morning or afternoon before their exam and the morning or afternoon of their exam. For example, as student who has a Monday afternoon exam will be excused from classes on Monday morning. The exception to this pattern is a Monday morning exam. Students with Monday morning exams are expected to be in class the Friday before.
Students are welcome to spend their study leave on or off campus. If on campus students should be engaged in study, not socializing, the CIC, iHub, Commons or High School Office. Students found to be abusing study leave will lose the privilege.
Final Parent Coffee
Please join us for our final HS Parent Coffee of the 2016-17 school year on April 25th at 8:45am in the BBT. Our high school counselors will debrief the high school student lifestyle survey and host a dialogue about social/emotional support strategies for high school students. Counselors will be debriefing the results with students next week.
Faculty Highlight - Geetha Venugopal
Ms. Geetha has been a member of the AISC community since 2001 and has been an international educator since 1989. She holds a MA in Educational Technology and another in Education. She loves to learn, explore and share anything new she picks up! In fact, Geetha was the founder of the AISC IT Department! Her proudest moments come when her students contact her to show their appreciation. When not teaching Geetha can be found writing (in Tamil), listening to Indian music or exploring astrology. A something you may not know about her is that Geetha loves to act in plays!
