Dear Students and Parents,
Please join me in congratulating the Discover India Chennai Trip participants for their outstanding efforts to provide flood relief in November. This past weekend three students (Adrienne Hoover, Kiana McBride and Ann Sofie Nesselhauf) gave an outstanding presentation to the board explaining the process they went through when the floods hit and the steps they took to provide relief throughout November and December. Together the group raised 224,230 Rupees which provided basic survival kits for 415 families in need. In addition they collected donations of 134 sheets, 292 liters of water, 695 biscuits/buns and 1551 items of clothing - all from the AISC community! Thank you for your support and please join me in extending our gratitude and congratulations to Sora Kubota, Kevin Lee, Normound McBride, Lina Panaruna, Jeongwon Park, Akanksha Ramesh, Aayush Rattha, Yuno So, Mridula Arvind, Merlin Thirion Gueltas, Hyein Jung, Mao Kanno, Dohoon Kim, Adrienne Hoover, Ann Sophie Nesselhauf, Kiana McBride, Mr. Malone, Ms. Connelly, Ms. Larsen, Ms. Derrickson and Ms. Chakko for their outstanding efforts.
Also this week, Anand Suresh represented the Student Advisory Forum by presenting to faculty a request to adjust the high school policies regarding homework and the use of the assessment calendar. Please join me in congratulating him for doing an outstanding job advocating for students!
IB Science Inquiry Project
IB Science students are working on an exciting inquiry project as part of their internal assessment requirement. They will visit Pallikkarnal Wetlands to conduct research in interdisciplinary groups and consider questions such as:
How does the pH, the viscosity of the water, light intensity and soil affect specific plant life?, How adaptive are the marshland plants if grown in different compositions of water?, What is the impact of encroachment on the developmental aspects of the buildings near the wetland?
Please join the students when they present their projects on Monday, February 1 at 3:30 in the BBT.
A Note from Mr. Thomson - Upcoming Tournaments - Attention Sports Fans!
Thursday Feb. 4th is the opening day of the SAISA Soccer & Tennis Tournaments hosted by AISC. There will be plenty of action as eight different schools join us on the soccer field and five different schools on the tennis courts. The opening ceremony will begin at 8:45 am on the Raptor Field.
The Tennis tournament will be held in two venues; the Raptor Perch on the roof and also on the Raptor Field behind the gym. The Soccer Tournament will be held on the Main Field. The first Soccer game will kick off at 9:30 am and Tennis at 10:00 am.

Food Service Update
Food Tasting for Parents! Are you on campus on Monday afternoon? Come join us in the FAC Cafeteria on Monday, February 1, from 2:30-3:30 pm (note this time change to encourage more parent participation!), to sample the student menu. Choices include salad, soups, Asian, Indian and continental meals all offered in both veg and non-veg. Parents will be asked to complete a short survey after tasting the menu items.
Prepackaged snacks are now sorted by nutritional value. We are happy to announce that the iHub and both cafeterias have three broad categories of packaged snacks, sorted by nutritional content. Students will be able to identify snacks using colored labels representing the total calories from fat in each snack:
Blue= 15% or fewer total calories from fat
Orange= 15%-30% of total calories from fat
Grey= 30% or more total calories from fat
Please take some time to discuss this new system with your child. Reference posters will be placed in the iHub and both cafeterias to guide children in their snack selection, and they will be hearing about it in other ways too.
Fresh breads are now available in the iHub and ES cafeteria, as a choice for both sandwiches and take away. New varieties include Tuscan bread, focaccia, bagel, multigrain, baguette, French loaf, oatmeal, Panini, kalonji, and more. Please stop by and pick up a loaf for dinner.
Food services at AISC are always looking for ways to improve. IB and AP Informational Presentation for Grade 10 Parents - A Note from Ms. Crouch - Repeat Announcement
If your child is considering AP or IB classes next year, please come to an informational session on Tuesday, February 9th at 5:15 in the FAC Cafeteria. Angelia Crouch, the IB/AP coordinator, will be discussing the various options available to your student within these programs. The same presentation will be held at lunchtime on the same day at 11:40 in the BBT for interested grade 10 students. Parents are welcome to attend in lieu of the evening program.
Attention Class of 2017 and Parents - A Message from Counseling - Repeat Announcement
Please join the High School Counselors for Junior Class College Night on Tuesday, February 9th at 6:30 pm in the FAC Cafeteria. This is an important event for Juniors to officially kick-off the college application/admission process. The presentation will not be country specific. It will outline what steps students should take to be prepared for their college applications next year, regardless of their destination. Ms. Larsen and Ms. McGlamery hope to see all members of the Class of 2017 and parents on this important evening!
The Third Annual AISC RAPTORTHON! - A Message from Ms. Donna - Repeat Announcement
What better way to spend Valentine's Day, Sunday, Feb. 14, 7AM-10AM, than with friends and family doing something that is heart-healthy. This has proven to be a FUN event.
Raptorthon is a FUN FAMILY AND COMMUNITY EVENT that combines swimming and running. Participants will be required to swim 150m, run 1600m then jump back in the pool and swim another 150m.
Enter as an individual or as a team of two (one person swims and the other runs). The entry fee is 300 rupees per individual and 600 rupees per team. This is an AISC Community Event. Anyone grade 4 and older may participate! (Watch for more information and a sign-up link next week!!!) The money raised will be used to cover the cost of the event and any remaining money will benefit the Chennai Flood Relief.
After the event, there will be a potluck breakfast provided by the entrants. All participants will receive a certificate with their official time at the breakfast.
