Resources for Process Recent Events
As devastating acts of terror continue to take place around the world, it is important to check in with children about their thoughts and feelings around such events. They inevitably will come across pieces of information online and need outlets for communication and support. Here are a few helpful articles when it comes to talking with and supporting children and teens through terror and trauma. Please click HERE and HERE for more information. As always, please reach out to your child's counselor if they need additional support in processing these events. We are here to help!
Photographing Varanasi Discover India Exhibit
The High School would like to invite you to visit our Photographing Varanasi Exhibit in the FAC Foyer from November 23rd to the 30th. As you may know, each year High School students travel in small groups all over the country as part of our Discover India program. This year a group traveled to Varanasi with a professional photographer to learn more about the art form and explore the amazing city. Each student has chosen three images out of the hundreds of photographs taken to share with the community. We hope you enjoy the exhibit.
Student Roster in Activities, Clubs and Sports
We are in the process of documenting and keeping track of our students and which activities, clubs and sports they are involved in. We ask that all head sponsors and head coaches send the roster to Sally and Ron as soon as possible.
Introducing the Hour of Code - A Message from the Tech Department
This December we’ll again participate in largest single learning event in history, and we hope to get even more learners involved. From December 7-11, children and adults all over the world will devote at least one hour to learning the absolute basics of how our computers and software programs work. Why? This graphic is a good place to start.
However, it’s about more than just jobs; coding is also constructive play, or what we call hard fun. When we code we use critical thinking skills such as design, analysis, evaluation, and problem solving to be creative while having fun. With code we can be entrepreneurs, artists, communicators and collaborators to name just a few.
We encourage learners from all grade levels to participate and share in the fun. Here are some ways you can get involved.
- Talk to your child to find out what they know about how their favorite programs are made.
- Sign up to learn to code with help from your child at school during that week.
- Encourage your children to visit the ES/MS CIC or FAC Cafeteria at lunch for some organized fun.
- Sign your child up for an ASA that will be held in the ES/MS CIC after school that week with an instructor from Wolfram.
- Simply send this link to your kids and give them some time explore with these great ideas from Edutopia or directly from the Hour of Code itself.
Juniors Begin the University Planning Process! - Repeat Announcement
As students (specifically juniors) begin navigating the process of testing for university admission, there are some changes to the options this year. In order to better help students understand their options and the redesigned SAT, we shared THIS link with them. We hope you also find it useful!
Save the Date! High School Parent Coffee - Repeat Announcement
The next High School Parent Coffee will take place on Tuesday, November 24th at 8:45 am in the BBT. Susannah McGlamery and I will share with parents some of the work we have been doing with students regarding mindfulness and parents will have the opportunity to participate in some mindfulness practice of their own.
A Note from SAGE - Repeat Announcement
Students, parents and faculty are encouraged to join SAGE for the second addition of #REELTALK, where they will be screening the movie Tomboy, a 2011 French film. The film explores the dynamics of youth and gender fluidity, exploring the emotion and tribulations of childhood and societal expectations. Food and drinks will be provided. After the movie, join SAGE members for a discussion of the movie and the themes it depicted.
#ReelTalk will be held on December 3rd at 6 PM onwards. If students are planning on attending, they should please fill out this Google form so we have an accurate count of students! Students are encouraged to talk with their parents about this film before confirming attendance as this is a NR-rated movie.
