Dear Students and Parents,

I hope to see everyone at the Welcome Back Picnic tomorrow (1:00 - 4:00 pm on the AISC field)!

Back to School Night... Thanks! - Many thanks to everyone who made this year’s Back to School Night a success!  From the high school band to our helpful NHS volunteers to the informative teacher presentations, we hope that everyone enjoyed the evening and learned a lot about our school.  Approximately half the student body was represented by a parent at Back to School Night and we hope to only see that number grow next year.  To help us make the evening even better, kindly take a moment to complete this short parent survey (even if you did not attend the event).

News from the AP/IB Coordinator - If your son or daughter is a 2015 full IB diploma candidate kindly visit Angelia’s blog to make yourself aware of a number of upcoming deadlines.

NHS/Student Council Leadership Retreat - AISC will host a leadership retreat for all NHS and Student Council members on Saturday, August 30th beginning at 8:00 am. The two groups will spend the morning together learning leadership and facilitation skills and, then, the afternoon in separate meetings to begin their planning for the year. NHS will finish at 5:00 pm, Student Council at 6:00 pm.  Food will be provided.

MAP Testing - Next week the high school will administer the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests in reading, language, mathematics and science to all 9th and 10th graders. These standards based assessments are given in schools worldwide and have been given in our middle and elementary schools for years.  The results of these tests allow us to measure growth over time and to help teachers better understand and meet the unique needs of each individual student.  The MAP results have no impact on a student’s grade in any of his or her courses.

Grade 12 College Guidance Meeting for Parents - Ms. McGlamery will host a College Application Process information session on August 27th at 9:30 am (cafeteria) and, again, at 6:00 pm (Hall of Light) for all interested parents. The presentation will include general information about the application process as well as a question and answer session.

High School Parent Coffee (repeat announcement) - The first High School Coffee will take place on August 26th at 8:45 am in the Cafeteria.  We will begin by showing a ten minute TED Talk by Sarah Lewis entitled “Embrace the Near Win.”  The talk is in English with Korean subtitles.  Parents wishing to watch the video in advance with subtitles of a different language are able to do so by clicking on this link, clicking the “download” button on the right side of the screen and selecting the desired subtitle language.

After viewing the video, the counselors and I will facilitate a conversation to explore how each of us defines success as individuals, in our family unit, in our own culture as well as how we, at AISC, define it in our classrooms.  We hope that the video and discussion will be both stimulating and informative.

Co-Curricular Activity Mela (repeat announcement) - The High School will offer an activities fair (or mela) on August 27th during lunch for all interested students.  This is an excellent opportunity for everyone to learn about the various options for getting involved in the community beyond the classroom.  Opportunities range from sports to service to clubs and organizations.  We hope that this mela will be well attended and that every student at AISC High School will find something of interest.

Yearbook Photos (repeat announcement) - Yearbook photos will be taken on September 2nd and 3rd in the Black Box Theater.  All grade 9 students will take their photos during period one.  All grade 10, 11 and 12 students are expected to make their own way to the Black Box Theater to take their photo during their free period.

Sincerely,
Joelle Basnight
