Dear Students and Parents,
In December we recognize students who are resilient as part of our Vision for an AISC Learner recognition process.
Resilient students demonstrate on-going commitment to their and our learning endeavors. These students practice persistence and patience in all situations, learning from successes and failures in the positive pursuit of their objectives, goals and dreams. Resilient students set and adhere to their goals, seek and integrate feedback and keep their eyes on the prize in all situations, especially when they are challenging or uncomfortable.
Congratulations to:
Grade 12: Minji Kim - Minji is amazingly resilient. She looks at setbacks as a learning opportunity and uses them to her advantage. Her ability to focus on her goals, reflect on her performance, and apply what she has learned from her mistakes served her in growing into the highly successful student she is today.
Grade 11: Donovan Smith, Donovan has persevered through challenging technology difficulties. He is honest in his self-reflection, faces his challenges and always finds the motivation to soldier on. Through this perseverance he has succeeded and can look back with a sense of satisfaction and continued faith in his abilities to never give up.
Grade 10: Moe Suzuki. Moe's resilience may not be obvious because she is so quiet, but she works hard and seeks out help. She is thoughtful and selective about how she pursues her goals. She knows what she needs, utilizes feedback very well and looks within for the strength to persevere.
Grade 9: Cedric Lingua, Faced with the mode of online learning, time zone challenges during the first half of the semester, moving to Chennai, and other life obstacles, Cedric has shown a quiet resiliency in his approach to learning. He handles setbacks with aplomb and shows us anything can be accomplished with enough determination.
Exam Week and Internet Issues
As you know, December 14-18 is our traditional final exam week. Students need only attend when their final exam is scheduled. As last semester, the final exams will be by subject, with a proctor supervising each class. Instructions for virtual examinations can be found here. There will be no module posted for students this exam week.
Post cyclone we have noticed that some students have their internet drop occasionally during synchronous lessons. Should this happen during exams, we ask that students abide by our honor code and simply log back into the call as quickly as possible to resume their examination. Should students experience a prolonged internet connection interruption, we ask them to contact Mr. Malone as soon as their internet returns. A prolonged absence from an exam will require sitting an alternative exam during the make-up sessions and/or in January.
Parent support to students for final exams:
Provide your student a quiet space close to a router and mobile hotspot to ensure connectivity
Check that your student understands what materials (ruler, calculator, e.g.) are required or not allowed and that they have what they need.
Read and sign the honor pledge with your student before the exam.
Report Cards and Documentation Availability
As a reminder, teachers will be marking final assessments and adding scores/comments to PowerSchool throughout the vacation and into January. We ask students to hold their questions about exam performance and/or final semester schools until school resumes on January 11th. Final scores are not due for teachers until January 18th to allow time for students to reflect on their performance and self-assess and for teachers to consider student input on academic achievement.
Report cards will be available at 4:00 pm on January 22nd and will be emailed home as a pdf that day. Students who would like a paper copy can contact the office on or after that date to make arrangements.
Families who may need report cards, transcripts or other documentation may also contact the office on January 22nd to make arrangements.
Hybrid Plans for Opening
Pending governmental order, we are preparing to offer a hybrid program in January. Details of the program will be explained in an introductory video shortly before the official opening date but, for planning purposes, please make note of the following. Please note that only students who have signed parent authorization will be able to return to campus. That authorization form will be circulated before campus opening.
When schools are allowed to open, as per government regulations, we will only be able to have half of the students on campus at any one time. As such, we will split the high school student population into two groups: Mango and Blue. Students will last names beginning with A through K will be placed in the Mango group. Students will last names beginning with L through Z will be placed in the Blue group.
Students will be phased back onto campus by their color group and grade level. For example, we will begin with hosting Grade 12 Mango students with an orientation followed by virtual learning hosted on campus by grade/color cohort. Once all students have been phased back on campus, we will return to attending mixed grade level classes in hybrid mode.
Once fully in hybrid mode, students in the Mango group will attend classes on campus on Mondays and Tuesdays. Students in the Blue group will attend classes on campus on Thursdays and Fridays. All students will study virtually on Wednesdays in order to allow for everyone to enjoy Crew and Wellbeing blocks together as a cohort, to allow for cleaning to take place in high school classrooms between cohorts and to support teachers in having collaborative meetings on campus.
Please note that virtual learning will remain as an option for all students who choose not to return to campus. We are presently installing technology solutions to make the hybrid classroom experience effective, efficient and enjoyable for all - whether in person in the classroom or via zoom virtually.
PCA Giving Tree - A Note from the PCA
It's that time of the year again! Christmas is coming - the New Year will soon be upon us.
It is also a time to think of the less privileged members of our community and we give you the opportunity to give, in the spirit of the holiday.
This year the PCA Giving Tree will be online. In collaboration with the organizations, we have created Amazon wish lists, which enable you to purchase books, craft materials, food, blankets, feeding bowls, etc. and it will be delivered directly to the organization.
Please see the PCA blog for more information.
