Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great vacation!
Please join me in congratulating a number of students who were recognized at our assembly this past Tuesday.
First, two of our seniors received recognition from the College Board for their performance on the 2015 PSAT as commended students. 1.6 million students take the PSAT and in 15/16 34,000 of them were named Commended Students. Congratulations Jannick Frampton and Suchithra Anand.
As you may know, AISC has combined aspects of the school’s various guiding documents to communication our vision for an AISC learner. This vision outlines the attributes we hope each student will develop through their work and learning at AISC. This vision hopes that students will become leaders, collaborators, innovators, explorers and thinkers as well as to be ethical, versatile, empathetic, resilient and reflective. Each semester we recognize one student per grade level in each discipline who best embodies the vision as a whole in their academics achievement and behavior. At our assembly each of the students below received a personalized introduction outlining their achievement and, then, were presented with the Vision for an AISC recognition for the term. Report Cards for Semester One
Report cards will be issued on Friday, January 13th. So teachers can add marks and comments in preparation for the 13th, Skyward access will be closed from January 6th until January 13th.
Meet Serge Nicolai
Mr. Serge Nicolai, one of our French and Spanish teachers has worked internationally for the last 19 years. He lived in various countries as a child and is trilingual. He is proud when students who have moved on come back to visit and share how much they loved his class. Serge is most passionate when moving beyond self-imposed limitations and loves to explore spirituality, movies and books. Mr. Nicolai can commiserate with students and the challenges of learning a language as he tried to learn Tamil with little success. If he could trade lives with any person for a day he would choose a saint on the last day of his life to explore what he believes would be a door to something much grander. Serge lives in Chennai with his wife and children, including grade 12 student Aline.
Upcoming HS Fun Night Out
Our next HS Fun Night Out is Movie Night under the Stars on Saturday, January 21 7-10:30pm. It will be a double feature night beginning with Sully followed by The Man Who Knew Infinity. Bring your blankets out to the field to enjoy one or both of these thrilling and inspiring films. It will be a night you won't want to miss. Movie refreshments will be served. Save the Date - Grade 9 History Day Presentations!
Please join us to celebrate the culmination of the 9th grade History Day Project by attending our event featuring their final products on Friday, January 20th from 4:00 - 7:00 pm in the Hall of Light.
Announcing the National Vex Robotics Workshop & Competition @ AISC - Lead by AltSense
The American International School Chennai (AISC) is happy to invite students (Grade 6 to 12) to participate in the National Vex Robotics Competition event, which is scheduled at AISC during January 27th and 28th in the Hall of Light between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm. The 27th will be dedicated to assembling Vex Robotics and learning the basics of the kit. The 28th will be dedicated to the competition. Upcoming SAISA Housing Needs - A Note from Mr. Thomson
On February 1-5, 2017, AISC has the honor of hosting the SAISA Boys Soccer Tournament and SAISA Art Festival. As you know, the ONLY way that we can do this is with your help in hosting the visiting players. This is a time-honored SAISA tradition and is practiced by every school that hosts a SAISA event. If your child has traveled with a SAISA or ASIAC team or activity, a family of the hosting school has housed them. It is now time to return the kindness. Hosting is an opportunity to interact with people from different countries and cultures, helps our programming and is an enormously positive experience.
We still need to house 14 BOYS Soccer players and 32 Art Festival (13 Girls and 19 Boys) participants. It is our school policy to house boys with boys and girls with girls. Because we have a dual event, we are contacting the families of our male and female athletes, musicians, artists and thespians.
Please help us by contacting us as soon as possible to let us know how many athletes and artists you can host, by contacting Ms. Sally Victor at vsally@aischennai.org. A hard copy has been sent home with your son. Your hospitality is greatly appreciated.
Make-Up School Days - A Message from Mr. Hoover - Repeat Announcement
Due to missed school days as a result of local events and weather in the past two weeks, the following days in January will be official school days:
Saturday, January 21 and Saturday, January 28
Why these days?
We are engaging these days as make-ups for two reasons:
1. They are at the start of the second semester when all students and teachers across the school can make effective use of extra learning and teaching time.
2. They are Saturdays at the end of 4-day weeks with calendared holidays. Students and teachers will not have 6-day study/work weeks.
Further, please note that the two Early Release Days in January will be full days of school in order to provide more instructional time in the month we return from the break.
