Dear Students and Parents,
What a great feeling to have all of our students back on campus!  We are off to a great start this year with students enjoying the new spaces we have available: the high school commons and the design technology lab!

Here are a few pictures from the first day of school.

A quick shout out to Vishnu Sriram, Uday Saharia and Nate Malone who chose to compete in the International World Scholar's Cup Competition in Prague this summer. The three finished as team champions, Vishnu earned the spot for top individual and both Nate and Uday finished in the top 25 individuals.  Additional congratulations to one of our new students, Karun Ram, who also competed this summer with a team from his previous school. There were 100 teams (300 students) from 31 countries participating.  All four boys have earned the chance to compete at the World Championships at Yale University in November with 2997 other students!  The World Scholar's Cup requires students to not only to exhibit academic excellence but to think creatively and speak with confidence.  Congratulations Karun, Vishnu, Uday and Nate!

A Note from the Counselors

Parents of the Class of 2017! Please join the counselors for an informational meeting about the college application process on FRIDAY, August 12th in the BBT at 8:45am. For many of you this will be a review of what we went over in the Spring. It will be a good time to come together with others who are getting ready for their child to leave the nest and we will answer lots of questions. Hope to see you there!

New Student Recognition Opportunities

We are pleased to announce that the high school is adding two additional recognition opportunities to our section related to the Vision for an AISC learner and related to academic achievement.

First, twice yearly each department will select a 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grader who best exemplifies the attributes outlined in the Vision within the academic discipline to be honored.  Second, each month the faculty will select one 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grader that best typifies, in general, one attribute of the profile through his or her academic/classroom efforts and behavior.

The monthly recognition will begin in September and the first honorees will be announced in the Principal’s notes at the end of the month. September will feature academic Thinkers.  Thinkers are those students who examine information critically and creatively to analyze and take considered action to solve problems in the classroom. These students exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical and data-informed decisions. Students may demonstrate their thinking by asking clarifying questions that deepen (increase?) understanding, by deeply engaging with the material taught in class, by considering information and ideas from multiple perspectives and by being thoroughly prepared and well informed.

A Note from the Fun Nite Out Parent Committee

Please mark your calendars for the first of our monthly parent sponsored high school social events - Fun Nite Out on Friday August 19th between 6:30 PM and 10:00 PM in the AISC Gym. This is a great opportunity for high school students to socialize, catch up with old friends and welcome new. The theme for the first event is a Sports Night and will include Dodgeball, Basketball, Volleyball and Table Tennis. The evening will begin with dinner, followed by sports activities and socializing. Snacks will be available throughout the event. Students may sign up now by clicking here or stopping by the H.S. Fun Nite table on Tuesday at lunch in the iHub area for more info!. We would highly encourage everybody to attend either to play or just hang out and cheer!

Save the Date: High School Back to School Night - Repeat Announcement

Please mark your calendars for the High School Back to School Night on Thursday, August 25th, and come and experienced an abridged version of a “day in the life” of your student(s).  Teachers will share an overview of their course and will answer general questions you may have.  You can pick up your student’s schedule between 5:00 pm and 5:15 pm which will be followed by a brief welcome in the Black Box Theater.  Classes will start promptly at 5:30 pm and end at 8:25 pm. Please join us!

Skyward Reporting Dates - Repeat Announcement
Families will receive regular updates about academic progress throughout the year.  Progress reports with grades and comments are sent home and posted online in the middle of each semester.  Report cards are sent home at the end of each semester.  Approximately once per month in between these official reports teachers will update their marks in our student information system Skyward for your review.  We call this a “Skyward Update.”

For your information the reporting periods this academic year will be as follows:
September 2 – Skyward update
September 30 – Progress report with comments
November 11 – Skyward update
December 9 – Skyward update
January 13 - Report card with comments
February 10 – Skyward update
March 3 – Progress report with comments
April 13 – Skyward update
May 12 – Skyward update
June 9 – Final report card
Student Schedule Changes - Repeat Announcement

Please note that the drop/add period for schedule changes is limited to the first six days of school.  This deadline is in place to help students settle into their classes as soon as possible.   Schedule changes made during this time do not require parents signatures.  This means that it is very important for families to discuss potential schedule changes before the student seeks out  his or her counselor.  If a family feels strongly that no schedule changes should take place without written parent permission they are encouraged to contact the appropriate counselor.
Please note that it is our expectation as a school that students would have made wise choices regarding their schedules last spring during the registration process.  As such, we expect students to pursue schedule changes only when truly necessary.  We will not entertain changes motivated by a desire to be in class with particular friends or to seek out a particular teacher.  Our counseling staff works very hard to balance our schedule such that no class is overloaded or too small.  This is to everyone’s advantage in terms of student learning.

Save the Date - Parent Coffee - Repeat Announcement

Our first high school coffee of the year will take place on Tuesday, August 30th, at 8:45 am in the Hall of Light (3rd floor).  Mike Malone and I will share the research and philosophy that guided the high school to write and implement the updated Assessment Philosophy and Guidelines (p. 50 of the student handbook).  We will leave plenty of time for parents to ask questions in order to deepen understanding.

A Note from the Athletic Director  - Student Health Forms - Repeat Announcement

Welcome to the 2016/2017 school year. I hope all of you had a fantastic summer break and are ready for the new school year. As a quick reminder, all AISC returning students are required to complete the "Student Health Form" and "Physical Exam Form" by the beginning of this school year. This form was sent to each of you in the final version of Principal's Notes last June.

Any student wishing to participate in ASIAC Table Tennis or Badminton and SAISA Swimming must have this form returned to the school by no later than Tuesday, August 16, 2016. Students that have not returned these forms by this deadline, will not be permitted to practice or participate.

The links to the Health Form and Physical Exam Form are as provided for your convenience. We appreciate your cooperation with this matter.

Sincerely,
Joelle Basnight
High School Principal
