Freedom from Chemical Dependency Week - From the Counseling Office
September 15 -19 is the Freedom from Chemical Dependency Week, and we have invited a prevention specialist from FCD Educational Services to join our community. FCD is a non-profit organization that provides substance abuse prevention education for schools. Since 1976, they have taught over a million students of all ages.
FCD Prevention Specialists are highly trained professionals who have achieved long-term recovery from alcohol or other drug addictions. This unique perspective enhances the credibility of their message and provides students with role models for happy, healthy, drug-free living. The FCD Prevention Specialist will present multiple parent workshops to offer support and guidance in helping your children enjoy a drug-free adolescence. You may choose to come to any one or all of these meetings.
Some of the topics to be addressed include:
• Effective ways to communicate with your child about drugs and drug use
• Up-to-date facts about current drug use and trends
• What to say about your own experiences with alcohol and/or drug
• How to spot early warning signs of trouble and effective ways to respond.
These parent meetings will take place on the following dates:
- Monday, September 15th from 2:00 – 3:30 in the Hall of Light
- Thursday, September 18th from 8:30 – 9:55 in the Hall of Light (specifically for parents who want to gain understanding of how to support your student with the transition to college)
- Friday, September 19th from 2:05 – 3:30 – in the Hall of Light (debrief about the week)
As a parent, you also have the opportunity to meet with the FCD specialist for an individual consultation if you choose. Please contact Priya Sarath at spriya@aisch.org to schedule an appointment.
During the week, the specialist will also be meeting with students in groups, as well as provide opportunities for students to drop in and connect on an individual level.
This program presents a perfect opportunity for discussing alcohol and other drug-related issues with your children. Parental involvement is crucial to our efforts to helping our students make healthy life decisions. We want our students to hear from both school and home that we are committed to keeping our children safe and empowering them with the tools to make smart choices.

Discover India trips depart one month from today! Students and staff will meet in the coming weeks to discuss the learning outcomes, special equipment needs and other expectations for each of our trips. If you are not familiar with the Discover India program please talk with your student about the trip he/she selected. There are 13 trips in total traveling all over India and students will have the opportunity to experience a wide range of activities. Trips depart on either October 5th or 6th and return on October 10th. Here is a video made by students on one of the trips last year to give you a glimpse of the experience. Update from the Office of Teaching and Learning
The spirit of international-mindedness at AISC is something that our students live each and every day, all year long. This year, we have decided to "connect the dots" between International Dot Day and the UN International Day of Peace to create a week long celebration of our commitment to being internationally-minded. We will be focusing on three themes this year:
- identity
- international-mindedness
- the rights of peoples to peace
We would like to invite all of you to join us for some of the celebrations during the week of September 15th. A few of those events are:
- Wear White For Peace - Thursday, September 18th - please make sure your child(ren) wear a white shirt on this day. We would love to have 100% participation.
- Candlelight Vigil - Thursday, September 18th from 3:45 - 4:15 in the FAC Foyer:
We invite teachers, students, and families to take part in a candlelight vigil focused on peace and justice. This will be a time to reflect on what peace and justice means to us. We ask all participants to wear white to show their support of peace.
Important Note: ES students must be accompanied by parents.
- R.I.S.E. FAC Auditorium, Friday, September 19th beginning at 5:00 p.m.
AISC will host its first R.I.S.E. (Resilience, Innovation, Service, Entertainment) event which will bring inspirational speakers, thought leaders, and entertainers to AISC to infuse new vision and dialogue relative to our mission, core values and student learning objectives.

As a part of their initiative they have chosen to enter a competition through Harvard’s Social Innovation Collaborative and we need your help in advancing them to the finals. IB DP Year One Core Meeting
The AP/IB Coordinator is hosting an informational meeting about the diploma program on September 11th. Information will cover the program's core requirements (TOK, EE and CAS) as well as details about assessments, procedures and how best to support students throughout the diploma program. This presentation is more relevant to parents of grade 11 IB Diploma students but is open to any parents of grade 10 students considering the diploma program. A one hour long session will run twice on Thursday, September 11th, from 10:00 - 11:00 am in the Hall of Light and from 6:00 - 7:00 pm in the BBT.
A Message from the Athletics Office
We currently are preparing for our upcoming ASIAC Table Tennis/Badminton Tournament on October 10-11 and our SAISA Swim Meet running from October 29 through November 2.
We need your help in housing all of our visiting athletes. If you can host for both of these events, that would be fantastic. If not, please help us out with at least one of these great events. Here are both forms: ASIAC and SAISA Hosting Form

CIC on Saturday! (Repeat Announcement)
Below please find an exciting announcement from the CIC…
It gives us great pleasure to announce that we will now be opening the ES and MS Collaboration and Inquiry Center (CIC) on Saturdays for our school community! Because of our commitment to literacy and learning, we think this will be a fantastic way for students, parents, and staff to utilize our print and digital resources even more. This will be a great opportunity to come in and exchange books, read, study, use the Internet, and work on collaborative projects. This is a space on Saturdays open to all students in grades preschool to twelve, so come on in and enjoy the CIC!
Hours and Dates:
Hours: 8:30-12:30, from September 6th until May 30th except January 24, February 22, May 1 and during school vacations.
CIC Saturday Policy Reminders:
1) Please sign-in on clipboards when coming to the CIC on Saturdays. This will help us with supervision as well as collecting data on Saturday usage.
2) Please enjoy food and drink outside the CIC.
3) ES students must be accompanied by a parent on campus during non-school hours (ES school policy). ES students should come to the CIC on Saturdays with a parent.
4) MS and HS students should only be on campus during non-school hours when they are part of a school-organized activity or sport. Saturdays in the CIC counts as a school-organized activity. If students leave the CIC, but are not taking part in another school activity or sport, they should leave the AISC campus.
