Last week, 9 High School Students (Priya Prabhakar, Seungmin Jung, Bryan Kim, Minsung Kim, Anand Suresh, Jared Sagar, Prannoy Thakore, Nihaal Shah and Jacopo Sem) participated in an exciting robotics workshop at Jeppiar Engineering College.
The workshop was entitled “Android Meets Ardu-Bots” and here is what the students had to say about their experience:
We immersed ourselves in building functional robots using code and intricate circuits. We learnt that engineering is not only about technological prowess, but using creativity to identify real-life solutions.
We discovered how to build in an innovative manner, which we saw creates a big impact upon our world. Android Meets Ardu-Bots had us apply a broader skillset to build our robot. We learnt that this was a platform to pursue future technological endeavors.
Android Meets Ardu-Bots showcased the imperative overlap of software and hardware as a necessity to build any system. Our students had an invigorating experience and hope to bring the virtues and practices learnt during the workshop back to AISC.
We are excited to highlight the work of these students as they exemplify our student learning outcomes - explore new interests with curiosity and evaluate real world situations while designing innovative solutions.
High School Parent Coffee
Jennifer Alevy and Ryan McFarland will be hosting this month’s parent coffee in the cafeteria at 8:45 am on September 23rd.
Jennifer, our librarian, will give a brief overview of our library services and, then, parents will have an opportunity to explore the database subscriptions and learn just how easy it is to do research!
Ryan, the coordinator of our Discover India program, will speak briefly about the differences between the high school and middle school week without walls programs and answer other questions about the high school program which takes place between October 5th and 10th.
Joelle Basnight will be attending a conference on the 23rd but the Associate Principal, Jason Hicks, and both Counselors, Susannah McGlamery and Correne Larsen, will be on hand to answer any general questions that arise.
Food Service Update
AISC is excited to announce their new Food Services Manager, Mr. Prakash Shanmugam. Prakash has a Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel Management and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Madras. He has eight years of working experience with the Taj Fisherman’s Cove, starting off as a Food & Beverages Associate and then as Restaurant Manager since November 2012.
Prakash’s love of food and vast experience in the hotel industry has already made a huge difference in the variety and quality of the food served at AISC.
· Our FAC Cafeteria now has a Dosa and Wrap counter. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are Dosa Days and Tuesdays and Thursdays are Wrap days. We also have a sandwich bar in the I-Hub and FAC and ES cafeterias every day.
· TMFK has added beef to our menu options. In addition to chicken and fish, we now serve beef on all days except Friday.
· TMFK has also introduced Korean and Thai cuisine. We will serve Korean on Mondays and Thursdays and Thai on Wednesdays.
· The Parent MC Café which was not operational since 8 August is open once again from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Big Bad Blue Introduction from the Aquatics Director
On the afternoon of Friday, October 3 (from 4:00 pm-6:00 pm) and all day Saturday, October 4 (from 8:00 am-6:00 pm) we will be sponsoring the Big Bad Blue Swim Meet at the AISC Swimming Pool. BIG BAD BLUE is an annual invitational swim meet that allows our SAISA Swim Team one big competition against local swim clubs and schools before heading off to Bombay for the SAISA swim meet on October 30-Nov. 1. It is also an opportunity to mingle with local folks from Chennai!
On Friday Evening we will run only four events for AISC Swimmers, ONLY. It gives our swimmers a bit of practice before they swim against students who have more opportunity for competition.
On Saturday from 4:00-6:00 pm local teams and their families will join us on campus to cheer on all every swimmer as they push themselves to attain personal bests in each event.
We hope parents and students will be able to watch, to cheer, to support and to VOLUNTEER to help at the meet. We cannot run this meet without community support. There are many ways that you can help and two days to choose from.
· If you can push a button when a swimmer touches the wall, you can be a TIMER!
· If you can read a results chart and put stickers on a ribbon, you can work to ORGANIZE AWARDS AND RIBBONS!
· If you have a great voice, you can be an ANNOUNCER!
· If you like to cook or bake, you can provide some goodies for the HOSPITALITY ROOM!
· If you are friendly and organized, you could work at the REGISTRATION TABLE!
Please consider giving 3 hours of your time on either Friday evening (4:00-6:00 PM) or Saturday (8:00 AM-5:00 PM)? It would mean so much to our swimmers and it’s a great way to get involved with our community! We will find some way to involve you!!!
Spirit Week is Next Week! (repeat announcement)
The week of September 22nd - 26th marks the High School’s official Spirit Week. Student council has been hard at work planning an exciting program filled with many opportunities for students to get involved and show their passion for AISC!
Each day of the week will have a theme and students are encouraged to dress in accordance. Each lunch will have a competition to earn prizes and points. We will have a pep rally Friday afternoon followed by exhibition volleyball games and the annual Homecoming dance!
Monday’s theme is “twin day” and students are encouraged to come in pairs/trios dressed identically. Those interested in participating in three legged race at lunch can compete for free Homecoming tickets.
Tuesday through Friday students can earn points for their grade level as well as win individual Homecoming tickets from lunch time events. Throughout this portion of the week students will collaborate on a class flag to be unveiled at Homecoming. The winning grade level will have their flag attached to the official “spirit stick” and it will be displayed in the iHub for the remainder of the year.
Tuesday’s theme is “pajama day” so students can roll out of bed and come to school provided they have two sleepy items in tow. Examples include teddy bears, slippers, actual pajamas (dress code applies), sleeping masks and the like. During first break students dressed by the day’s theme are encouraged to line up and get counted to earn points for their grade. The lunchtime competition is the “lemon walk” in which points for the grade can be earned and the ultimate winners will get free Homecoming tickets.
Wednesday’s theme is “mismatch day” so just about anything goes as long as at least two items of clothing do not match (dress code applies). The lunchtime competition is a watermelon eating contest that earns points and free tickets too.
Thursday’s theme is “fictional character day” and students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite villain, hero, cartoon or anime character (dress code applies). The lunchtime competition is a jenga tournament with, again, both points and Homecoming tickets.
Finally Friday is “school colors day” so students should come in blue and white to show their spirit. At lunch student can untie a human knot for points and tickets before heading to the pep rally at the end of the day. We hope all students will remain on campus to cheer on the boys and girls volleyball teams from 4:00 - 7:00 pm.
The Homecoming dance will be in the cafeteria from 7:00 - 9:30 pm, dress is casual and pizza will be served. Part way through the dance the grade level with the most points for the week will be officially recognized as the spirit flags are unveiled.
Please encourage your son/daughter to participate in any or all of these events. It should prove to be a fun and energetic week on campus!
